Overview

The Modhera Sun Temple is an 11th-century architectural complex dedicated to the solar deity Surya, built by the Solanki dynasty. The site is divided into three distinct axial sections: the Surya Kund, the Sabha Mandapa, and the Guda Mandapa. The Surya Kund is a rectangular stepped tank featuring 108 miniature shrines embedded in its stone walls. The temple was engineered so that the first rays of the sun would fall on the deity's image during the equinoxes. Intricate carvings cover the outer walls, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and daily life of the medieval period. The temple structure is built of sandstone without the use of mortar. It is located on the left bank of the Pushpavati River. The entire site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
