Overview

Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu's Fort, is a well-preserved granite fortification located in the heart of Palakkad, Kerala. Originally constructed by Hyder Ali in 1766, the structure was later modified and reinforced by his son, Tipu Sultan, during the late 18th century. The site features high-walled ramparts, deep trenches that were formerly connected to the Kalpathy River, and a central granite courtyard. Within the complex lies the Anjaneya Swami Temple, which remains an active place of worship. The Archaeological Survey of India currently maintains the fort as a protected monument. The grounds incorporate a sub-jail, a museum, and sub-collector's office within the perimeter walls. Visitors can walk along the elevated ramparts to view the surrounding landscape. The structure is characterized by its strategic defensive architecture, including bastions at each of the four corners.
