Overview

Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is a fortified medieval complex guarding a narrow isthmus leading to the Old Town. The structure features eleven towers, with the Papal Tower being one of the most prominent sections. Its location on a rocky peninsula surrounded by the Smotrych River canyon serves as a natural defensive moat. While the site dates back to the 14th century, it was significantly reinforced by Polish kings to defend against Ottoman and Tatar incursions. The castle walls encompass a courtyard, a former prison, and underground tunnels. It functions today as a primary component of the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve. The site remains a rare example of a well-preserved bastion fortification system in Eastern Europe.
