Overview

The Sansevero Chapel Museum in Naples houses the Veiled Christ, a 1753 marble sculpture by Giuseppe Sanmartino noted for its hyper-realistic depiction of a translucent shroud. The chapel serves as a family mausoleum for the di Sangro family and is designed to express the complex esoteric and alchemical interests of Raimondo di Sangro, the seventh Prince of Sansevero. Central to the collection are the anatomical machines, two skeletons preserved with an early arterial injection method that displays the human vascular system. The interior layout features intricate polychrome marble floors and a ceiling fresco by Francesco Maria Russo titled the Glory of Paradise. The chapel contains ten statues representing specific virtues commissioned by the Prince. It functions as both an art gallery and a site of 18th-century scientific curiosity. The building occupies the original site of the Santa Maria della Pietà chapel, constructed in 1590.
