Overview

Eryri National Park, formerly known as Snowdonia, spans 823 square miles in northwest Wales. It contains Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales and England, reaching an elevation of 1,085 meters. The landscape is characterized by glacial landforms, jagged peaks, and deep valleys carved during the last ice age. The park includes over 100 lakes and encompasses 14 peaks over 3,000 feet, often called the Welsh 3,000s. It features the largest natural lake in Wales, Llyn Tegid. The region is a stronghold for the Welsh language, spoken by a significant portion of the local population. It is home to diverse ecosystems, including rare arctic-alpine flora and fauna found at high altitudes. The park's terrain is protected under various conservation designations, including National Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Insider tips

Check the Mountain Weather Wales forecast specifically before any high-altitude hiking, as conditions change rapidly.

Use the 'Park and Share' schemes or the Sherpa Bus network during peak season to reduce traffic congestion in narrow village roads.

Carry a physical map and compass, as mobile signal is inconsistent or non-existent in many valleys.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the highest peaks in standard casual footwear or without adequate navigational gear.

Good to know

Specific mountain paths or facilities may undergo temporary seasonal maintenance; the Yr Wyddfa summit visitor center has seasonal operational windows.
