Overview

Bara Imambara is a 18th-century congregation hall complex featuring the Bhulbhulaiya, a sprawling labyrinth of interconnected passages on the upper floor. It was commissioned by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784 to provide employment during a devastating famine. The central hall is one of the largest vaulted chambers in the world without external support beams or pillars. The structure incorporates a complex acoustic system that allows a whisper at one end of the gallery to be heard clearly at the opposite end. An intricate interlocking brickwork technique was used throughout the construction, omitting the use of wood or metal. The complex also houses the Shahi Baoli, a five-story stepwell with an underground tunnel system. The courtyard contains the Asfi Mosque and a large, ornate gateway known as the Rumi Darwaza. The architecture represents a transition from Mughal to Awadhi styles, utilizing Lakhauri bricks and lime plaster.

Insider tips

Hire an official government-approved guide to safely navigate the maze and understand the acoustic anomalies.

Wear socks, as you will be required to remove your footwear to enter religious areas and the cool stone floors can be uncomfortable.

Carry a small flashlight for the darker, unlit sections of the labyrinth.

What to avoid

Avoid engaging with unauthorized touts or 'guides' at the entrance who offer to take you through secret, unapproved passages.

Etiquette

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is required; remove footwear at the entrance; maintain silence in the prayer areas.
