Overview

Borra Caves are a natural subterranean limestone cave system located in the Ananthagiri Hills of the Eastern Ghats. Situated at an elevation of approximately 705 meters, the caves reach a depth of 80 meters and span a length of about 200 meters. The karst formations are primarily shaped by the Gosthani River, which flows through the limestone deposits. The cave interior features intricate stalactite and stalagmite formations, some of which mimic figures like Shiva-Parvati, Mother Mary, and a tiger. These caves were first discovered by British geologist William King George in 1807. The environment inside is characterized by high humidity and varying levels of natural light penetrating through fissures. The site is a protected geological monument managed by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the limestone floor is frequently wet and slippery.

Bring a light jacket if you are sensitive to cool, damp environments.

Avoid touching the rock formations, as oils from human skin can inhibit the natural mineral growth process.

What to avoid

Avoid relying on local unofficial guides who may provide inaccurate historical information; do not stray from the marked, lit walkways.

Etiquette

Maintain a low voice volume to respect the cave's natural acoustics; do not litter inside the cavern.
