Prakasam Barrage is a 1,223-meter-long barrage spanning the Krishna River in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Completed in 1957, the structure replaced an earlier anicut built in the 1850s by Sir Arthur Cotton. The barrage serves as a critical irrigation project, regulating water flow to the Krishna Delta, which spans over 1.2 million acres. It features 70 counterfort-type flood gates designed to manage the seasonal flow of the Krishna River. A roadway runs across the top of the barrage, connecting the Krishna and Guntur districts. The structure creates a large lake upstream, which is a focal point for the city's urban landscape. During the monsoon season, the opening of the crest gates creates significant water turbulence and visual interest. It acts as a primary water source for municipal drinking supply and agricultural needs in the surrounding region.
