Overview

Chitradurga Fort, known as Kallina Kote or Stone Fortress, is a monolithic hill fortress built in layers between the 10th and 18th centuries. The site is uniquely defined by its natural boulder-strewn landscape integrated into the defense walls. It features 19 majestic gateways, 38 postern gates, and 35 secret paths. The fortification system includes 18 temples within the complex, such as the Hidimbeshwara Temple. Water management was a priority, evidenced by the series of interconnected tanks located within the fort walls. The site served as a strategic stronghold for the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas, and the Nayakas of Chitradurga. Its construction utilizes the existing large granite rocks of the Chitradurga hill range as structural components.
