Overview

The Ajanta Caves are a series of 29 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments carved into the horseshoe-shaped scarp of a basaltic rock formation. Dating from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE, these caves served as retreats for Buddhist monks and centers of academic study. The site is world-renowned for its surviving tempera paintings and sophisticated rock-cut architecture. The caves were rediscovered in 1819 by a British officer during a tiger hunt. They are preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The paintings depict scenes from the Jataka tales, reflecting the artistic mastery of the Gupta and Vakataka periods. The interior layout includes chaitya-grihas (prayer halls) and viharas (monasteries). Due to the delicate nature of the frescoes, many areas have controlled artificial lighting to minimize environmental damage.
