Interesting facts
1

The gate was buried under city walls for centuries, which unintentionally protected it from destruction and weathering.

2

The two towers flanking the gate were built in different periods; the southern tower dates to the Roman era, while the northern tower is largely Byzantine.

3

The gate features no inscriptions dedicated to Hadrian, leading some historians to believe it was a broader celebratory project for the city.

4

Visible ruts in the stone pavement show the exact track width of Roman-era chariots.

5

The structure is part of a larger defensive wall system that once enclosed the entire ancient port city.

6

It is the only remaining entrance gate of the ancient city walls that is still in good condition.

Overview

Hadrian's Gate is a triumphal arch constructed in 130 AD to commemorate the visit of Roman Emperor Hadrian to the ancient city of Attaleia. It serves as the primary entrance to Kaleiçi, the historic old town district of Antalya. The structure features three identical arched bays flanked by four columns on each side. While the original design included a second story, only the lower portion remains standing today. The gate is built primarily from white marble, contrasting with the surrounding ancient city walls. Deep grooves are visible on the floor slabs, created by the constant passage of chariot wheels over centuries. The structure was rediscovered in the late 19th century when the city walls protecting it collapsed. It remains a functional pedestrian passage connecting the modern city center to the historical quarters. Restoration efforts have reinforced the structural integrity of the stone vaults.
