Overview

Seiganto-ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in the Nachisan mountains of Wakayama Prefecture, forming part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' It is distinctively positioned adjacent to the three-tiered red pagoda that frames the Nachi Falls, Japan's tallest single-drop waterfall. Founded in the 5th century, the temple is one of the 33 pilgrimage sites along the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. The current main hall was reconstructed in 1590 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It shares its grounds with the Kumano Nachi Taisha, a Shinto shrine, reflecting a historical syncretism between Buddhism and Shintoism known as Shinbutsu-shūgō. The site includes a dedicated hall for the Nachi mountain deity and serves as an active hub for ascetic practices.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the approach involves steep stone staircases and uneven mountain paths.

Carry small change for temple offerings and to purchase Goshuin stamps for your pilgrimage book.

Check local weather reports, as the mountain area is prone to sudden mist and heavy rainfall.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the stairs in formal or restrictive footwear; failing to account for the steep physical exertion required to traverse the shrine and temple complex.

Etiquette

Maintain silence inside prayer halls, remove hats, and follow signage regarding photography restrictions within the main altar area.
