Interesting facts
1

The cave contains calcite crystals that formed over millions of years inside a massive fossilized coral reef.

2

It is the only cave of its kind in Germany where the public can walk through a system featuring such high density of natural crystals.

3

The main dome of the cave reaches a height of approximately 30 meters, making it one of the tallest underground halls in Germany.

4

The cave was discovered by chance in 1974 during local surveying work.

5

The total length of the mapped cave system extends over 2 kilometers, though only a fraction is accessible to tourists.

6

The cave serves as a hibernation site for various species of bats during the winter months.

7

Despite being a limestone cave, it lacks the typical extensive stalactite and stalagmite formations found in many other European caves, focusing instead on crystal structures.

Overview

The Kubacher Kristallhöhle is the only crystal cave in Germany and features one of the highest cave halls in the country. Discovered in 1974, the cave system is situated within a massive limestone reef dating back to the Devonian period. Visitors descend approximately 30 meters underground to explore a 200-meter-long section of the total 2,000-meter system. The site is characterized by an abundance of sparkling calcite crystals covering the walls and ceilings. Controlled lighting highlights the mineral formations throughout the guided tour path. The cave remains a constant temperature year-round, regardless of external weather conditions. It is located near the town of Weilburg in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland region.

Insider tips

Bring a warm jacket as the underground temperature remains at a constant 8-9 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as the path can be damp and uneven in sections.

Arrive early in the day during peak summer weekends to avoid longer wait times for guided tour groups.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to explore the cave outside of the guided tours; the site is protected and access to non-tourist sections is restricted.

Good to know

Open seasonally from spring through late autumn; closed during the winter months for bat hibernation and maintenance.

Etiquette

Touching the cave walls or crystals is strictly prohibited to preserve the mineral deposits. Photography is allowed, but tripods are generally discouraged due to space limitations in narrow passages.
