Overview

Castello dei Conti di Modica is a rhomboid-shaped fortress in central Alcamo, Sicily, featuring four corner towers with distinct cylindrical and square bases. Built in the 14th century and expanded in the 15th, it served as the seat of the feudal lords of the region. The structure is constructed primarily of calcarenite stone and contains a central courtyard that currently functions as a venue for cultural exhibitions and local events. The castle’s historical defensive role is evident in the preserved merlons and the thick perimeter walls. It currently houses the Museo Etnografico, which preserves tools and artifacts related to local agrarian and artisan life. The site transitioned from a private military residence to municipal ownership in the 19th century. Its architectural design represents a late-medieval evolution of Sicilian defensive fortifications.
