Overview

The Shree Gundicha Temple serves as the final destination for the deities during the annual Rath Yatra festival in Puri. Known as the Garden House of Lord Jagannath, this Kalinga-style temple is situated approximately three kilometers from the main Jagannath Temple at the end of the Grand Road. The temple complex is constructed from light-grey sandstone and is enclosed within a high wall, featuring a garden that surrounds the main sanctuary. For most of the year, the sanctum remains empty, awaiting the arrival of the deities. During the nine-day Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra reside within this temple to receive offerings. The architecture reflects the traditional Odishan temple design, characterized by a vimana and a jagamohana. Devotees participate in a ritual cleaning of the temple floor known as Gundicha Marjana before the deities arrive. It remains a focal point for pilgrims navigating the spiritual landscape of Odisha.
