Overview

Narew National Park is characterized by its anastomosing river system, where the Narew River divides into a network of shifting channels and marshlands. Located in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, it protects a unique 'Polish Amazon' ecosystem. The park encompasses the valley between Suraż and Rzędziany, covering approximately 7,350 hectares. It provides essential habitats for wetland birds, including the globally threatened aquatic warbler. Visitors primarily explore the park via a series of wooden footbridges and elevated boardwalks that cross the swampy terrain. The terrain is flat, with the riverbed's morphology subject to seasonal flooding. Its headquarters are housed in a historic 19th-century manor in Kurowo.

Insider tips

Carry mosquito repellent, as the marshland environment remains highly active during warmer months.

Bring binoculars to observe birdlife from the designated observation towers.

Wear waterproof footwear even during summer to handle potential overflow on wooden paths.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk off the designated paths, as the soft, waterlogged soil and dense reeds are difficult to navigate and environmentally sensitive.

Good to know

Boardwalks may be partially inaccessible or slippery during high spring flood events.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked boardwalks to prevent damaging delicate peat ecosystems and to avoid deep mud.
