Overview

Gökçöl Mağarası is the second longest cave in the Zonguldak province, extending over 875 meters with 825 meters open to tourism. It is a multi-layered, fossilized cave system characterized by high-density speleothems including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and flowstones. The interior is divided into four distinct zones, with the final section featuring a subterranean stream. Geologically, the cave displays complex karst formations resulting from the dissolution of limestone. Walking paths have been installed throughout the accessible sections to facilitate visitor navigation. The cave is situated along the main highway leading into the Zonguldak city center, making it a prominent geological landmark in the region. Its interior environment remains stable, preserving the integrity of the varied mineral deposits.

Insider tips

Wear non-slip, closed-toe walking shoes as the interior paths can be damp and slippery.

Bring a light jacket as the ambient temperature inside the cave remains significantly cooler than the outside air year-round.

Move slowly to allow your eyes to adjust to the dim interior lighting which is designed to protect the cave's ecosystem.

What to avoid

Avoid touching the walls or straying from the designated concrete walkways to protect the fragile cave environment.

Good to know

Operating schedule may be subject to seasonal adjustments; verify local access during the winter months when snow accumulation can occur.

Etiquette

Do not touch the stalactites or stalagmites as oils from human skin permanently damage the growth and coloration of the mineral formations.
