Overview

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat. It contains a collection of 8th to 14th-century Hindu and Jain temples atop Pavagadh Hill and 15th-century Islamic architecture in the city of Champaner. The site covers approximately 1,329 hectares and remains one of the few completely unchanged pre-Mughal Islamic cities. Significant structures include the Jama Masjid, characterized by its transition from Hindu to Islamic architectural styles. The site displays fortified walls, granaries, and water-harvesting systems integrated into the rugged hillside terrain. Archaeological excavations have revealed prehistoric chalcolithic sites alongside medieval structural remains. The landscape is dominated by the steep cliffs of the Aravalli range which historically served as a defensive barrier.
