It was captured by the British in 1803 from the Marathas after the Battle of Aligarh.
The defensive moat surrounding the fort was once filled with water and stocked with crocodiles to deter invaders.
Its unique layout features a dodecagonal (12-sided) plan, which was rare for fortifications of that era.
French engineer Benoit de Boigne was responsible for redesigning the fort's bastions to accommodate modern artillery in the 1790s.
Aligarh Fort, also known as Aligarh Qila, is a 16th-century fortification located on a hilltop in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Constructed during the reign of Ibrahim Lodi around 1525, the fort served as a key strategic military site throughout the Mughal and British periods. Its architectural profile is dominated by a deep, broad circular moat and a classic bastion design intended for defensive positioning. The fort was significantly renovated and strengthened by French generals working for the Maratha Empire in the late 18th century. It houses remnants of residential barracks and historical military infrastructure within its perimeter. The surrounding area features gardens and elevated pathways offering views of the Aligarh urban landscape. The site is currently maintained under the supervision of the Aligarh Muslim University campus premises. It stands as one of the few surviving examples of pre-colonial military architecture in the region.
