Caspar David Friedrich sketched the ruins multiple times, most notably in his 1824 work 'The Abbey in the Oakwood'.
The monastery was founded by Danish monks from Esrum Abbey, initially settled at Dargun before moving to the Ryck river mouth.
Following the Reformation in 1534, the monastery was secularized and its assets transferred to the University of Greifswald.
The building materials were looted by Swedish forces in the 17th century to fortify the Greifswald city walls.
The site represents one of the earliest examples of monumental Brick Gothic architecture in the region.
Eldena Abbey is a Cistercian monastery ruin established in 1199, located on the outskirts of Greifswald, Germany. The site is world-renowned for its depiction in the Romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, which elevated the ruins to an icon of German landscape art. The architecture features the transition from Romanesque to Brick Gothic style, a hallmark of the Baltic region. The monastery was significantly damaged during the Thirty Years' War and subsequently used as a quarry for local construction. It was systematically stabilized and landscaped as a park in the 19th century under the direction of Peter Joseph Lenné. The remaining masonry includes the preserved north wall of the church and remnants of the cloister structures. The site currently serves as an open-air venue for regional cultural events and concerts.

Do not attempt to climb the unsecured masonry walls, as the ruins are protected and unstable.
The ruins are accessible year-round as a public park; however, some events may occasionally restrict access to the interior grounds.
