Interesting facts
1

The gorge was formed by the erosion of loess soil, a porous, wind-blown silt deposit common in this region of Poland.

2

The name 'Korzeniowy Dół' translates literally to 'Root Pit' or 'Root Gorge' due to the distinctive exposed root systems.

3

Loess soil is exceptionally susceptible to water erosion, causing the gorge to undergo constant, albeit slow, structural changes.

4

The area serves as a natural habitat for various species of ferns and mosses that thrive in the shaded, high-humidity microclimate of the gorge floor.

Overview

Wąwóz Korzeniowy Dół is a natural loess gorge located in the Lesser Polish Gorge of the Vistula landscape park. The gorge is defined by its steep, vertical walls of fragile loess soil, which are exposed to erosion by wind and water. Its most distinctive feature is the network of exposed, tangled tree roots that drape over the canyon walls, resembling natural sculptures. The path through the gorge is approximately 500 meters long and winds through a dense deciduous forest. The ground surface consists of loose soil and sand, which can be slippery or muddy following precipitation. The site is a protected geological monument within the Kazimierz Landscape Park. It remains one of the most frequently visited natural attractions in the Lublin Voivodeship.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip, as the terrain is uneven and can be slippery.

Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds, as the narrow path creates bottlenecks during peak hours.

Bring a light jacket, as the temperature inside the gorge is often several degrees lower than the surrounding area.

What to avoid

Avoid entering the gorge in heavy rain, as the ground becomes extremely muddy and the walls can become unstable.

Good to know

The gorge is accessible year-round, though paths may be blocked by fallen trees or snow in extreme winter conditions.

Etiquette

Do not climb on the steep loess walls or pull on exposed roots, as this accelerates erosion and damages the protected landscape.
