Overview

Badshahi Mosque is a 17th-century Mughal architectural landmark featuring red sandstone construction and white marble domes. Commissioned by Emperor Aurangzeb and completed in 1673, it remained the largest mosque in the world for over 300 years. The courtyard spans nearly 279,000 square feet, capable of accommodating 100,000 worshippers. Its design draws heavy inspiration from the Jama Masjid in Delhi. The interior is decorated with intricate fresco work and marble inlay. The structure sustained significant damage during the Sikh Empire era when it was repurposed as a horse stable and ammunition storage, later undergoing extensive British-led restoration. It is currently an active place of worship under the management of the Auqaf Department. The mosque stands as a centerpiece of the Walled City of Lahore.
