2

The current tower serves a dual purpose as a telecommunications transmitter.

3

The base of the tower is located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, making it one of the highest observation points in the region.

4

The mountain Javorník is historically significant as a transition point between the Šumava region and the Pošumaví foothills.

Overview

The Javornik lookout tower is a steel structure standing on the 1,066-meter high Javorník mountain in the Šumava National Park. The current tower was constructed in 2003, replacing an older historical wooden structure from 1938. Visitors reach the observation deck via 180 stairs. The vantage point offers a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Šumava mountains, the foothills of the Bohemian Forest, and, under optimal visibility, the distant Alps. The tower is situated at the intersection of several hiking and cycling trails connecting the villages of Vacov and Stachy.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars to identify distant peaks in the Austrian Alps on clear days.

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the surrounding forest terrain is uneven.

Check local weather reports before ascending, as the summit is prone to rapid fog development and high winds.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the ascent during thunderstorms due to the exposed steel structure.

Good to know

Open daily throughout the year, but may be inaccessible during extreme winter weather or heavy snow accumulation.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near the transmitter equipment; do not climb the railings.
