The 9/11 Tribute Museum officially closed its physical location at 92 Greenwich Street in August 2022 due to financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. While the physical gallery is no longer operational, the organization has transitioned its mission to a digital platform. The museum was founded by the September 11th Families’ Association to provide a platform for survivors, first responders, and family members to share personal accounts. Unlike larger national memorials, the focus was specifically on the human experiences and immediate aftermath of the attacks. It served as a community-driven repository for artifacts and personal stories directly linked to the recovery and cleanup operations. Visitors previously accessed guided tours led exclusively by those who lived through the events.
