Lismore Castle is a historic fortress overlooking the Blackwater River in County Waterford, Ireland. While the castle interiors remain a private residence for the Duke of Devonshire’s family, the expansive gardens are open to the public. The site dates back to 1185, when it was originally built by Prince John of England. It later served as a bishop's palace before becoming the seat of the Boyle family, the Earls of Cork. The current Gothic-revival architecture largely reflects mid-19th-century renovations overseen by Sir Joseph Paxton. The estate features seven acres of formal gardens, including a notable walled garden that retains its 17th-century layout. The gardens contain contemporary art installations which rotate annually through the Lismore Castle Arts initiative. Visitors can access the lower gardens, which offer views of the castle exterior and the river valley below.
