Overview

Ponte do Freixo is a modern road bridge spanning the Douro River in Porto, connecting the city to Vila Nova de Gaia. Designed by architect António Reis, it was inaugurated in 1995 to alleviate traffic congestion on the city's other crossings. The structure is composed of two parallel bridges separated by a small gap of only 10 centimeters. It is the easternmost bridge of the six major crossings connecting Porto and Gaia. The bridge features a high-clearance design to ensure the continued passage of river traffic. It acts as a critical node in the Circular Regional Interna do Porto (CRIP) highway system. The bridge is characterized by its utilitarian, sleek concrete aesthetic rather than ornamental masonry.
