Overview

Sakura Castle Ruins Park occupies the site of the former Sakura Castle, the only castle in Chiba Prefecture to be ranked among Japan's 100 Finest Castles. Although the original wooden structures were dismantled in the 1870s, the massive earthen fortifications, moats, and stone foundations remain intact. The park is highly regarded for its botanical diversity, featuring over 1,100 cherry trees of various species that bloom at different times throughout the spring. It also hosts a reconstructed tea house, Sankentei, which offers a traditional setting for viewing the surrounding landscape. The site serves as the primary green space for the city, housing extensive walking trails through reconstructed wooded areas and former residential zones of high-ranking samurai. Visitors can explore the remnants of the inner bailey, including the Honmaru-ato where the primary castle tower once stood. Information boards throughout the park explain the layout of the Edo-period fortress. The adjacent Sakura City Museum of History and Folklore provides further context on the site's military and cultural history.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the park features uneven paths and inclines common to historical fortress sites.

Visit the on-site information office to pick up a printed map of the historical ruins to better orient yourself among the earthworks.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months, as the densely wooded areas near the moats attract mosquitoes.

What to avoid

Do not mistake the modern museum buildings for the original castle architecture; the castle structures are gone, leaving only the land layout.

Etiquette

Maintain quiet behavior near the tea house; do not walk on the preserved earthen ramparts unless explicitly marked by paths.
