Overview

Sarıkaya Mağarası is a significant karst cave located in the Yığılca district of Düzce province, accessible via a designated wooden walkway system. The cave features a main gallery extending approximately 350 meters with a total length of 700 meters. Geologically, it is noted for its rich dripstone formations, including active stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones created by ongoing mineral-rich water seepage. A subterranean stream flows through the lower sections, contributing to the cave's high humidity levels. The cave was opened to tourism in 2012 following infrastructure improvements to ensure visitor safety. It remains one of the primary natural heritage sites within the Western Black Sea region of Türkiye.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with high-traction soles as the cave floor remains wet and slippery year-round.

Bring a light jacket as the cave's internal temperature is significantly lower than the outdoor air.

Use a headlamp if you intend to photograph the detailed texture of the limestone walls.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb off the designated wooden paths, which are there for both visitor safety and cave conservation.

Etiquette

Do not touch the stalactites or stalagmites as the oils from human skin stop their growth process.
