Overview

Honen Pond Dam is Japan's oldest multi-arch concrete dam, designed by the dam engineering pioneer Mamoru Kogi. Constructed between 1926 and 1930, the structure is recognized as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It features 32 buttresses and 17 arches that support its 141-meter-long crest. The design was heavily influenced by the Haas-style multi-arch dams developed in the United States during the early 20th century. It is primarily used for agricultural irrigation in the surrounding Kanonji plains. The dam undergoes periodic water releases, creating a dramatic overflow effect across its distinct arched face. The structure is located deep within a valley, providing a contrast between its industrial architecture and the surrounding natural vegetation.
