The structure sits against a dramatic rock cliff, which forms part of the natural topography surrounding the sanctuary. Visitors can explore the sanctuary grounds, the surrounding village of Peneda, and the adjacent pilgrim accommodation buildings. The site serves as a vital point along the route for pilgrims traveling through the northern mountains of Portugal.
