Interesting facts
1

Mount Adatara is an active volcano that last erupted in 1997.

2

The mountain is famously described as having 'no sky' in the poem 'Chi ni Kakeru' by Kotaro Takamura.

3

The summit area features the 'Numano-daira' crater, which contains a highly acidic, emerald-colored volcanic pond.

4

The ropeway saves hikers approximately 90 minutes of vertical ascent compared to the full trail from the base.

5

Visible on clear days from the summit ridge are the Bandai Mountains and the Inawashiro Lake basin.

Overview

The Mt. Adatara Ropeway provides access to the 1,700-meter summit area of Mount Adatara, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The gondola lift carries passengers from the Odaira base area to the Yakushidake plateau in approximately 10 minutes. From the top station, a marked hiking trail leads to the summit of Mount Adatara, known for its active volcanic crater and sulfurous vents. The surrounding Adatara Highlands are part of Bandai-Asahi National Park. Visitors can observe the contrast between the lush green summer foliage and the dramatic, stark volcanic terrain near the summit. The ropeway operates year-round, serving ski enthusiasts in winter and hikers throughout the warmer months.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or additional layers, as temperatures at the 1,350-meter upper station are significantly lower than at the base.

Check the official Adatara Resort website for wind-related service suspensions before traveling.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes if you intend to walk from the ropeway station to the actual mountain summit.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike to the summit in casual footwear or open-toed sandals.

Good to know

Operations are subject to suspension during high-wind events; maintenance closures may occur periodically in spring and late autumn.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on marked hiking trails to avoid exposure to toxic volcanic gases.
