Overview

Eğirdir Castle is a historic fortification located on the narrow peninsula separating Eğirdir Lake from its northern bay, Hoyran Lake. Originally built during the Byzantine era, the structure was significantly modified by the Seljuk Turks and later the Hamidid Beylik. The castle walls provided protection for the historic town center, which has since developed around the masonry foundations. While much of the original curtain walls have been reclaimed by residential buildings, sections of the western wall and the entrance gate remain visible. The site serves as a physical link between the town's dense urban core and the waterfront promenade. It functions primarily as an open-access historical remnant rather than a fully enclosed museum site. Its strategic position offers panoramic views of the lake's southern basin and the surrounding Taurus Mountains.
