Overview

Geumwolbong is a collection of unique, bizarrely shaped sandstone rock formations located along the shores of Cheongpung Lake in Jecheon. The site was discovered by accident during a cement mining project in 1993, when the unusual rock shapes were exposed. Resembling a miniature version of Mount Geumgang, the formations occupy an area of roughly 1,000 square meters. The site serves as a frequent filming location for Korean historical dramas due to its surreal, dramatic aesthetic. Visitors can view the entire cluster from a small wooden deck and walking path situated just off the main road.

Insider tips

The viewing area is quite small; combine this stop with a visit to the nearby Cheongpung Land or Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex.

Be mindful of traffic as the site is located directly off a high-speed road, and the entrance is not always clearly marked.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb or touch the fragile sandstone formations, as they are susceptible to erosion.

Etiquette

Stay on the designated wooden walkway to protect the sensitive rock formations and avoid trespassing on adjacent private property.
