Overview

Museong Seowon is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the nine Korean Neo-Confucian academies inscribed on the World Heritage List. Established in 1696, it originated from the Taesan Seowon, which was founded in 1536 by the scholar Jeong Geuk-in. It serves as a commemorative site for influential Confucian scholars including Choe Chi-won and Jeong Geuk-in. The site features traditional wooden architecture arranged according to principles of Neo-Confucian hierarchy. It remains a physical testament to the historical intellectual tradition of education and ritual in the Jeonbuk region. The site layout preserves the distinction between the lecture area at the front and the shrine area at the rear.
