Overview

Mushkpuri Peak is the second-highest mountain in the Galyat region, reaching an elevation of approximately 2,800 meters. The summit is accessible via a well-marked hiking trail starting near the hill station of Nathia Gali. The ascent passes through dense sub-alpine conifer forests characterized by pine and spruce trees. From the top, the trail offers panoramic views of the Jhelum River gorge and the snow-capped peaks of the Kashmir valley. The peak is a prominent feature of the Ayubia National Park landscape. The trail covers a distance of roughly four kilometers from the base at Nathia Gali to the summit. During the spring and summer months, the meadows leading to the peak are covered in diverse wildflowers. The summit plateau provides a flat, open space suitable for rest before the descent.

Insider tips

Wear high-traction hiking boots, as the trail can be slippery after rain.

Carry a light windbreaker or fleece jacket, even in summer, due to sudden weather shifts at the summit.

Bring sufficient water, as there are no reliable natural sources or shops once you begin the ascent.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike during the winter months without professional equipment, as the trail becomes covered in thick, hazardous snow and ice.

Good to know

Best accessible from spring to early autumn; winter access is often restricted due to heavy snowfall.

Etiquette

Practice leave-no-trace principles; carry all litter back to the base; respect the privacy of local villagers living near the trail access points.
