Overview

The Leaning Tower of Niles is a 94-foot-tall replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, built at exactly half the size of the original. Constructed in 1934 by industrialist Robert Ilg, it originally served as a cooling tower for an outdoor swimming pool complex. The structure features the same architectural style as the Italian original, including its signature lean. In the 1990s, the park surrounding the tower was redeveloped to include the Leaning Tower YMCA and various office buildings. The site is currently owned and managed by the Village of Niles. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. The exterior utilizes original Italian design motifs to mimic the Pisa structure's appearance. It stands as a local landmark within a suburban office park setting.
