Overview

Hakone Estate and Gardens is one of the oldest Japanese-style residential gardens in the Western Hemisphere, established in 1918. It is located on 18 acres of hillside terrain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The estate features a moon bridge, koi ponds, and a dry landscape Zen garden. The architecture includes authentic tea rooms and a pavilion modeled after the Kinkaku-ji temple in Kyoto. The property served as the filming location for the 2005 movie Memoirs of a Geisha. Visitors access the site via a steep, winding path through a bamboo grove. The estate is currently a public non-profit organization dedicated to Japanese horticultural preservation.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes as the terrain is steep and features many stone steps.

Bring a light jacket as temperatures in the Santa Cruz foothills can be cooler than in the valley floor.

Check the official website for event dates, as the gardens occasionally close for private weddings or cultural festivals.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk from downtown Saratoga, as the road leading to the entrance lacks pedestrian sidewalks and has high-speed vehicle traffic.

Good to know

Closed on certain major holidays and occasionally during private events; check the calendar before arrival.

Etiquette

Stay on marked paths to protect delicate moss and plant life; silence mobile devices in the tea garden areas.
