Overview

Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple is the only Shiva temple in Tirupati, situated at the base of the Tirumala hills. The temple is unique for being located directly at the foot of the cliff where the Kapila Theertham waterfall cascades into a large tank. The main deity, Kapileswara Swamy, is a swayambhu (self-manifested) lingam. The temple complex features architectural elements from the Vijayanagara and Chola periods. The tank, known as the Pushkarini, is considered sacred and is a focal point for ritual bathing. The site is geographically distinct because it sits at the confluence of the mountain stream and the plains. It serves as a spiritual gateway for pilgrims before they ascend to the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple. Several sub-shrines within the complex are dedicated to goddess Kamakshi and other deities.
