Overview

Castell de Peníscola is a 13th-century Templar fortress situated on a rocky peninsula protruding into the Mediterranean Sea. The structure was built on the site of a former Moorish alcazaba and serves as one of the few examples of a Templar-built castle in Spain. It achieved historical significance as the seat of Pope Benedict XIII, known as 'Papa Luna,' during the Western Schism. The fortification features Romanesque architectural elements, including barrel-vaulted chambers and a central parade ground. Thick stone walls enclose the residence, chapel, and stables once used by the Knights Templar. The castle stands at an elevation of 64 meters above sea level at the highest point of the rocky tombolo. The site is currently managed by the Diputación de Castellón and serves as a historical museum and venue for cultural events.
