Overview

Makkah Masjid is one of the oldest and largest mosques in India, commissioned by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in the 17th century. The structure features a large prayer hall, a central courtyard, and an ornate gateway constructed with granite blocks transported from a nearby quarry. The name is derived from the grand mosque in Mecca, as bricks for the central arch were allegedly transported from the holy city. The mosque complex serves as the official necropolis for the Asaf Jahi dynasty, containing white marble graves of the Nizams of Hyderabad. It can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers at a time. The site is a prominent example of Qutb Shahi architecture, characterized by its imposing facade and intricate stucco decorations. The central prayer hall stands 75 feet high and is flanked by two large octagonal pillars carved from single granite boulders.
