Interesting facts
1

The waterfall is situated on a geological formation known as the Ciletuh Formation, which contains some of the oldest exposed rocks in West Java.

2

Its horseshoe shape is a result of the unique geological structure of the Ciletuh Basin, an ancient volcanic caldera.

3

The sedimentary rocks surrounding the fall are layered with tectonic material that dates back over 50 million years.

4

Water levels are significantly influenced by the seasonal rainfall in the upper reaches of the Ciletuh river basin.

Overview

Curug Awang is a wide, horseshoe-shaped waterfall located within the UNESCO Global Geopark of Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu in Sukabumi. Measuring approximately 40 meters in height and 60 meters in width, it is often described as the 'Niagara of West Java' due to its expansive terrace structure. The waterfall is fed by the Ciletuh River, which flows over prehistoric sedimentary rock formations dating back to the Eocene epoch. The surrounding landscape features distinct amphitheater-like cliffs formed by geological uplift and erosion. During the height of the wet season, the water volume increases significantly, turning the cascade into a singular, powerful curtain. The site serves as one of the primary geosite attractions within the Ciletuh Geopark area.

Insider tips

Bring waterproof gear for your electronics as the mist at the base can be heavy.

Wear footwear with high-traction soles to navigate the rocky and occasionally muddy terrain.

Carry your own supply of drinking water as amenities are limited near the primary viewing areas.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the pool directly beneath the main drop, as the strong currents and submerged rocks pose significant safety risks.

Good to know

Access may be restricted or hazardous during periods of intense rainfall due to potential trail washouts.

Etiquette

Practice 'leave no trace' principles by carrying all waste back out with you; stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing the local flora.
