Overview

Fayette Historic State Park features a preserved 19th-century industrial townsite located on the Big Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan. The site served as a major pig iron smelting operation for the Jackson Iron Company between 1867 and 1891. Visitors can explore over 20 original and reconstructed structures, including the furnace complex, hotel, town hall, and worker residences. The park encompasses 711 acres, blending historical architecture with limestone cliffs and dense hardwood forests. It is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a living history museum. Interpretation panels are located throughout the townsite to detail the social and industrial history of the community. Archaeological excavations have recovered thousands of artifacts, some of which are showcased in the visitor center.
