Overview

Elbasan Castle is a historic fortress originally constructed in the 4th century by Roman Emperor Diocletian as a legionary camp known as Scampis. The structure features a distinctive quadrangular layout with 26 fortified towers, covering approximately 10 hectares in the heart of modern Elbasan. During the 15th century, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II reinforced the existing Roman walls to support his military campaigns. Today, the fortress walls enclose a residential neighborhood, blending ancient stone masonry with traditional Ottoman-era housing. The site includes the ruins of an early Christian basilica, an Ottoman-era clock tower, and a medieval hammam. Archaeological excavations have revealed significant mosaics and structural elements dating back to the late Roman and early Byzantine periods. The fortress currently serves as a living historical site, integrated into the daily urban fabric of the city.
