Overview

Lac de Saint-Ferréol is a man-made reservoir created in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet to supply water to the Canal du Midi. It serves as the primary water source for the canal, feeding into it via the Rigole de la Montagne. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage area, recognized for its historic engineering significance. The lake covers 67 hectares and features a dam that was the largest earth-fill embankment of its time. Visitors access the lake via the commune of Revel at the foot of the Montagne Noire. It functions as a multipurpose leisure site, offering swimming beaches, hiking trails, and sailing opportunities. The surrounding parkland contains mature trees and areas designated for picnicking. The site includes a museum dedicated to the history of the Canal du Midi and the lake's construction.
