3

The structure underwent a major multi-year restoration before reopening as a contemporary museum space in 2018.

4

During the early 20th century, it was the social center of Bari, hosting cabaret, operetta, and film screenings.

5

The interior retains original decorative elements despite its shift from a performance venue to a modern gallery.

Overview

Teatro Margherita is a historic theater built on stilts over the sea, located at the entrance to the old port of Bari. Originally constructed between 1910 and 1914, it now functions as a contemporary art exhibition space. The structure was designed by architect Francesco De Giglio to replace the former Varietà Margherita theater that burned down. It features an eclectic architectural style, blending Art Nouveau influences with reinforced concrete construction. The building stands on massive concrete pillars driven into the seabed, making it a unique maritime landmark in the city. Since its restoration, it has served as a cultural hub for rotating international art installations. It is integrated into the city’s waterfront redevelopment area near the Lungomare.
