Overview

The South Simcoe Railway operates Ontario’s oldest operating steam locomotive, Engine No. 136, on a historic former Canadian Pacific line. The heritage railway offers a round-trip excursion between the villages of Tottenham and Beeton, traversing the scenic Beeton Creek Valley. The excursion runs approximately 50 minutes, featuring restored 1920s-era coaches. The railway is operated entirely by a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to preserving Canadian railway history. Passengers experience a journey through mixed forests and rolling rural landscapes that are otherwise inaccessible to the public. The train passes through an original trestle bridge, which is a focal point of the historic rail corridor. The site is a registered Ontario heritage attraction that highlights rural Victorian-era engineering and travel. Equipment includes a 1923 Baldwin locomotive and various vintage rolling stock.

Insider tips

Book your tickets well in advance online, as the limited capacity trains frequently sell out during peak weekend operations.

Arrive at the station early to watch the locomotive being prepared, as the steam-up process is a major part of the experience.

Sit on the side of the train facing the valley for the best photography opportunities during the trip.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk along the tracks outside of designated boarding areas, as the corridor remains active and narrow.

Good to know

Operating season runs from mid-spring through October; typically restricted to weekends and statutory holidays.

Etiquette

Closed-toe shoes are recommended for walking on the gravel near the tracks and around the vintage station.
