Overview

Aam Khas Bagh is a significant 17th-century Mughal-era historical site originally built by Emperor Akbar and later renovated by Shah Jahan. It functioned as a royal transit lounge for Mughal emperors traveling between Delhi and Lahore. The complex includes the 'Sard Khana', a sophisticated ancient air-cooling system designed to combat the intense Punjab summers. The architectural design features a central water channel and a series of terraced gardens. It served as a residence for local governors during the reign of the Durrani Empire. Currently, the site is maintained as a historical garden and archaeological monument by the State Department of Archaeology. It is located in the town of Sirhind, which was a major provincial capital during the Mughal period.
