Overview

The Bismarck Tower is a 24-meter-tall stone observation tower situated on Zelená hora (Green Mountain) at an elevation of 637 meters above sea level near Cheb. It is one of the few remaining Bismarck monuments commissioned by the German Student Union in the early 20th century to honor Otto von Bismarck. The structure was designed by architect Wilhelm Kreis, who won a competition for a standardized Bismarck fire column design. Constructed between 1907 and 1909, the tower serves as a reinforced masonry landmark in the Karlovy Vary Region. It offers panoramic views of the Cheb Basin, the Ore Mountains, and the Slavkov Forest. Following decades of neglect during the Cold War, the tower underwent extensive restoration in the early 2000s to reopen as a public viewpoint. Visitors access the upper gallery via a narrow internal stone staircase.
