The Wassertor is the last remaining gate of the original five that guarded the medieval harbor of Wismar. Constructed in 1450 in the Brick Gothic style, it served as a critical defensive fortification and customs point for maritime trade. The structure features a gabled facade characteristic of the North German Hanseatic architecture of the 15th century. It stands at the boundary where the old town transitions into the harbor area. Historically, it provided access between the inner city and the Baltic Sea vessels. The gate was part of an extensive wall system designed to protect the town’s commercial interests during the Middle Ages. Its survival makes it a primary example of Wismar's defensive heritage within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the historic city center.
