Overview

Archaeological Zone Tlapacoya is located on the slopes of the Tlapacoya volcano and represents one of the earliest sites of human habitation in the Basin of Mexico. The site is most significant for its deep stratigraphic record, featuring evidence of human presence dating back to approximately 12,000 to 20,000 years ago. Excavations have revealed diverse cultural periods, ranging from the nomadic Paleo-Indian hunters to the more complex settled societies of the Preclassic period. A prominent feature is the conical mound, or pyramid, constructed by the Tlatilco culture, which reflects early Mesoamerican religious and social architectural practices. The site also includes a series of natural caves that were utilized for both ritual and burial purposes. Because of its location on a former island in the ancient Lake Chalco, the site provides unique insights into how early populations adapted to lacustrine environments. Current site management is overseen by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH). It serves as a significant research center for archaeologists studying the transition to sedentary agricultural life in the central Mexican highlands.
